Hunts County Squash Club (HCSC) was founded in 1967, and is one of the most active squash clubs in Cambridgeshire. A fourth exhibition standard squash court has now been added, the first to be built in Cambridgeshire for a number of years. With a seating capacity in excess of 125 spectators, front and rear wall video facilities for both coaching and recording of major events and under floor heaters for controlled heating, the court has already been approved by England Squash as a venue to hold national training days and open tournaments.
The Squash Club offers an impressive qualified coaching team, headed by James Powley (level III) and supported by David Morgan (level IV) and Nicky Hastings (level II). In addition, three professional squash tour players are attached to the club and train regularly with the club's top junior and senior players. We have men's and ladies teams competing in the Cambridgeshire squash leagues. Matches are played every week over the county and a very high standard of squash can be seen in the top divisions. The County Championships have been played at the Club during the last 5 years. At the senior level we excel and the 2004/2005 Cambridgeshire Premier League was won by HCSC. We also hold several club tournaments each year. This includes handicaps, doubles, and club championships. The tournaments are extremely sociable and enjoyable.
HCSC has flourished throughout its history. Many club members have represented the County, universities and various countries at different age groups. The Club has held exhibitions by ex-World Champions and regular training programmes for Markers and Scorers.
HCSC is also home to the Squash Academy run by David Morgan. The Sports Academy is an integral part of Hunts County Squash Club. Originally founded in Surrey in the early 1960s, the Sports Academy has set a standard for the development of young squash players. In the period between 1961 and 2001, over four hundred young players have been trained under the Sports Academy umbrella, both in England and Canada, with 50 or more of these reaching a standard where they were selected to represent their home countries at different age levels.
Thanks to the support of Hunts County Squash Club, local coaches and some national players (most of whom have come through previous Sports Academy programs), the Sports Academy was relaunched in November 2002 and began working with young squash players from all over Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire. In addition to the local youngsters, young international players come on a regular basis to the Sports Academy as residential students, to train, practice and play squash in Europe. In recent months players from Canada, France, Spain and Guatemala have stayed at the Sports Academy cottage in St Ives, Cambridgeshire, training and playing with the local players for up to six hours daily.
Already in the short time since its relaunch at Hunts County, Sports Academy players have played competitive events in Portugal, Ireland, Belgium, Austria, Spain, Holland, Scotland, Wales and Canada. In particular, a two-way exchange of players between Canada and England has been a feature of the programmes for advanced players.
